Award of Science & Maths Excellence

Award of Science & Maths Excellence

Don’t forget – Log onto www.primaryscience.ie before March 26th to submit your intention to apply for an Award of Science & Maths Excellence. This year the criteria have changed to include Maths.

Registered schools applying for an Award of Science & Maths Excellence must keep a Discover Log recording their science related work which must be submitted by 23rd April 2010.  Credit is given for providing evidence of involvement in:

  • One activity relating to each of the four strand units in the Science Curriculum
  • Visiting one of the Discover Primary Science accredited Discover Science Centres or inviting speakers to school to talk about science related topics
  • Holding a science display day or event
  • Giving three examples of how your school integrated maths into your science work.

The assessment of the Awards of Science & Maths Excellence process begins following the closing date for submissions on 23rd April 2010.  Registered schools, who have applied on the website by the 26th March, will receive an application form in the mail, close to the submission date.

Winning schools will receive their plaque directly from the Plaque Company by Monday 31st May 2010 so you have plenty of time to organise your own school celebration.

Greenwave 2010

Screenshot of Greenwave website

Every year a green wave, caused by the opening of buds on trees and hedges, can be seen moving across Europe from outer space in springtime. Primary school students record sightings of six species – horse chestnut, hawthorn, ash, primrose, swallow and frog - which are indicators of spring. These sightings are then logged on the Greenwave website. When the results have been mapped and analysed we can track this progression of spring and see if the green wave moves from south to north across Ireland or inland from coast to centre. Log onto www.greenwave.ie to see last year’s results.

Why take part in the project?
The Greenwave project is an excellent opportunity for primary school students to participate in genuine scientific activity. Taking part in the Greenwave Project is a practical way to support the teaching of the Plants and Animals Strand Unit in the Living Things Strand of the SESE curriculum. Students will be gathering information, studying and recording when Ireland’s plants and animals react to warming and lengthening days in spring, and analysing the results.

In 2009 students measured and recorded the rain fall as spring arrived. This year, we are asking schools to measure the wind speed.

Teachers can now log on to www.greenwave.ie for regular video updates from Eanna Ni Lamhna and Gerard Fleming who will provide advice and the latest news on sightings as well as highlighting what exactly to look out for.

Once again, the best photos submitted in 2010 will be selected by a panel of judges and the winning photographers will be presented with a series of excellent and exciting prizes. So get snapping!

Discover Primary Science:
By taking part in the Greenwave Project your school earns credit towards the Awards of Science & Maths Excellence as part of the Discover Primary Science programme.
