RDS Primary Science Fair

Where do machines get the strength to climb a hill, Ballyadams NS, Co. Kildare RDS PSF 2014

Roll up Roll up! Ever wondered if all cows have blue eyes or not?

Projects from 120 primary schools from Ireland north and south will be on display at the RDS Primary Science Fair this January. The Fair runs alongside the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition from January 8 – 10, 2014 in the RDS. This is a great chance for visiting schools to be inspired by the projects on display and to get ideas from talking to other primary school students and teachers.

All the projects seek to answer a specific question and will demonstrate how students have been working scientifically, using designing and making skills and working together on child-led investigations. Come along and discover new ideas and techniques for teaching STEM in your classroom too!

For more information or to contact the RDS Primary Science Fair team please visit http://www.rds.ie/primarysciencefair 01 240 7990 or email primarysciencefair@rds.ie. For entrance tickets contact the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition on 1800 924 362.

Engineers Ireland

Start planning your Engineers Week 2015 celebrations

Engineers Week is an opportunity for primary school students and teachers to learn more about engineering, have fun, and win prizes. Running or attending an Engineers Week event counts towards the criteria for the DPSM’s Awards of Science and Maths Excellence.

Engineers Week 2015 takes place from 8th to 14th February, and the theme is 'Engineering is for everyone', reflecting how engineering impacts all our lives. For example, engineers create the buildings we live in, design medical devices to improve our health, and make the entertainment systems we use.

There are 3 ways for schools to get involved:

  1. 1. Design your own engineering trail
Make a trail with an engineering theme in your school or local area, for a chance to win a prize for your class. More details coming soon.
  2. 2. Book an event
See what organisations are running events in your local area in our event listings (coming soon). Organisations will offer participants the chance to win an individual prize and a prize for your school.
  3. 3. Organise an event/activity in your school
Organise an activity or event in your school, and you could win a goodie bag for your class. Visit the Engineers Week website for activity suggestions.

Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland - One Good Idea

One Good Idea

Are your students interested in making a difference to their environment? The One Good Idea project is their opportunity to inspire the people around them to make small lifestyle changes that will save energy and help tackle climate change. One Good Idea has been running in post primary schools since 2009, we are now looking for 20 primary schools to participate in a pilot for 2015.

The challenge for students is to design a creative, exciting awareness campaign that shows people in their community how just One Good Idea can make a difference. Registration is open now and schools have until 28th November to register their interest. The 20 participating schools will receive a workshop in the New Year to help them get started. Lots of supports will be available to teachers including a project pack, website, dedicated hotline and email.
