Teachers from St. Declans, Ashbourne at workshop

Exploring our Energy, a programme for teaching energy in the primary science curriculum with supporting teacher workshops.
Primary School Teachers – bring renewed energy into your Science class with SEAI’s Exploring our Energy programme. It is designed to help primary school children learn about energy through the Science Curriculum and is now available to view online here.

In-school teacher workshops are available throughout the country to help you get started with the programme and can take place during or after school hours. To book a workshop for 2015 email us seaiworkshops@globalactionplan.ie

The programme explores energy and science in a real world way, investigating how and why as a society, we need to develop new ways of looking at our energy resources.

Exploring our Energy has been developed by St Patrick’s College, Dublin.

Engineers Ireland

Engineers Week

Get ready for Engineers Week 2015
Engineers Week, 8th-14th February, is an opportunity for primary school students and teachers to learn more about engineering, have fun, and win prizes.

Running or attending an Engineers Week event counts towards the criteria for the DPSM’s Awards of Science and Maths Excellence.

There are 3 ways for schools to get involved:

  1. Organise an event/activity in your school
Organise your own activity or event, and you could win a STEM show or workshop for your class. Visit the Engineers Week website for activity suggestions.
  2. Book an event
See what organisations are running events in your local area in our event listings. Organisations will offer participants the chance to win an individual prize and a prize for your school. Keep checking the site as more events are added every day.
  3. Request a school visit
Invite a volunteer engineer to visit your class, by uploading your school’s details. Note: Visits are subject to availability of volunteers in your area.

For more information, visit http://www.engineersweek.ie.

Well done to all RDS Primary Science Fair Participants!

Engineers Week
Pictured at the opening day of the 2015 RDS Primary Science Fair students from S.N. Chobh Chionn tSaile, Cork and their project 'What sea creatures inhabit the rocky shore of Kinsale and what adaptations help them survive?'

Well done to the 120 schools from across Ireland who displayed their class science investigations at the 2015 RDS Primary Science Fair in January. There was a fantastic array of projects on display and the judges were amazed by the creativity and innovation that the students displayed in their work. Thank you to all of the teachers, principals, parents and children who put in so much effort to make sure the 2015 Fair was such a great experience for all involved. We were unable to offer places to all the schools who applied but we hope that you will continue your science investigations and join us for 2016!

EUMETSAT Minecraft satellite-building competition

EUMETSAT is launching a Minecraft satellite-building competition for 6-16 year olds this week: Build a weather satellite in Minecraft.

The aim of the competition is to get competitors to build a model of one or more of EUMETSAT’s weather satellites in Minecraft, or to be creative and design their own satellite from scratch. The closing date of the competition is April 30 2015.

All entries will be displayed on the EUMETSAT Learning Zone website and the winners of the two categories will each get Lego Mindstorms. There will also be runners-up prizes of Raspberry Pi (mini PC) starter kits.

More information about the competition is available on EUMETSAT’s Youth Education website and on the flyer.
