The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has responsibilities for a wide range of licensing, enforcement, monitoring and assessment activities associated with environmental protection. Environment is a hot topic with strong links to Science, so here’s a website with up the minute Irish information and lots for schools to do.
The EPA has a range of web based resources for schools on their website www.epa.ie. In the primary school section, you will find resources that have been developed in close consultation with Irish primary schools, using current Irish data and closely linking them to the primary school curriculum. The resources are divided into five topic packs: Waste, Natural resources, Impacts and pollution, Nature and Environmental care. There are teacher’s notes and worksheets to give you all the background to the activities and student worksheets that you can download for printing and use in the classroom.
Examples of activities include testing lung capacity, measuring air pollution, building a rain gauge, simple crop rotation and using tetrapaks to build a 3-D graph showing how much waste we produce. There are also useful guides to common birds and ideas for projects to survey and improve the environment in your local area. The packs are available in English or Irish.
There are also some simple computer games for children to enjoy. The Catulator game calculates your environmental footprint with the help of a mean dog and a weary cat. In the Aqualator game, the bedraggled cat helps you to work out how much water you waste or save. So log on and have fun!
